The Greenbushes Lithium Operations has two processing plants, one producing technical-grade lithium concentrates and one producing chemical-grade lithium concentrate. Ore containing Li 2 O is fed into the processing plants which upgrade the lithium mineral, using gravity, heavy media, flotation and magnetic processes, into a range of lithium concentrates for bulk or bagged shipment.
During standard processing lithium mineral concentration follows the simplified chart of Fig. 1 (Garret, 2004). The enrichment involves crushing and grinding steps in order to liberate the lithium minerals and adjust the grain size distribution for the subsequent separation steps, e.g. flotation or gravity separation.
